about John C. McKew, Ph.D.:
John McKew is Chief Scientific Officer of Lumos Pharma. Dr. McKew most recently served as Vice President of Research for a biotechnology company called aTyr Pharma. There he was responsible for the leading the research organization aimed at understanding and harnessing the therapeutic potential of tRNA synthetases. In this role he was responsible for both research and all preclinical IND enabling work.
Dr. McKew moved to aTyr from the NIH where he was the acting Scientific Director of the Division of Preclinical Innovation at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS). His responsibilities included developing both the Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Disease (TRND) and the Bridging Interventional Development Gaps (BrIDGs) programs. Both programs focus on novel public/private partnerships to advance drug discovery projects through preclinical development into early clinical development. The department he led also included NCATS’ high throughput screening center and its Tox21 in vitro toxicology initiative. Multiple collaborative therapeutic projects for rare and neglected tropical diseases advanced through to IND and into the clinic in partnership with these novel programs.
Before joining the NIH, Dr. McKew held a director level position at Wyeth Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At Wyeth Research he led a variety of research initiatives including a hit-to-lead chemistry group which supported cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and metabolic disease therapeutic areas. He began his professional career at Genetics Institute, Inc., where he worked on translating novel inflammation targets into clinical candidates.
Dr. McKew is also currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Boston University School of Medicine. He has also served as the Chair Elect, Chair and Immediate Past Chair of the American Chemical Society’s Northeastern section. He has over 60 peer reviewed publications and granted patents. Dr. McKew graduated from State University of New York at Stony Brook with B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry, completed his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at University of California, Davis and held post-doctoral research positions at the University of Geneva and Firmenich, SA.
Dr. McKew currently resides on a small organic farm in the Agricultural Reserve of Montgomery County Maryland.
